There is no doubt that Calgary is a Canadian city made for shopping Canada like no other. Calgary retains freshness in its atmosphere and a friendliness that cannot be matched elsewhere, and is well known for the western flavor that comes from the wide assortment of cattle and grain products that are on sale there.

The city of Calgary contains the usual mix of old and new, but it seems more energetic, even in the old parts. There many unique shopping sites, including malls, boutiques, and specialty shops, both in and out of the malls. For example, Bankers Hall located in downtown Calgary is a fashionable upscale mall that still manages to find room for those who enjoy conservative shopping. Its Wine Gallery boasts hundreds of different wine selections from around the world.

Another large mall found in Calgary is the Chinook Centre. There are 150 businesses located on the premises, with many of them well known nationally and internationally as well. In appearance, Chinook Centre looks most like a space ship and some big name stores can be found by those shopping Canada within its fuselage.

Calgary Stampede Season is both the best and the worst time to shop in Canada. The streets are lined with the usual tourist junk, but they also contain beautifully handcrafted fashion and art items from the local artisans. If you want to purchase Christmas decorations and other holiday delights, Stampede time in Calgary seems to be a good time to do so.

Artspace Gallery on the second floor of the old Stockyard building is an intriguing place to wander on a lazy afternoon. This space is combined with the indoor farmers market open year around and the outdoor farmers market open only during summer and early fall months. Here you will find an unusual combination of flea market, farmers market, and art gallery plus a food court of note.

Because of the proximity of the Canadian Rockies, there are many shops in Calgary which feature outdoor equipment and clothing. An great place to shop for such items is the Mountain Equipment Co-Op. Prices here are kept low to reasonable and it only costs you $5 per year to become a member of the Co-op. Everything from outdoor gear to sturdy, yet attractive clothing is available. The MEC as it is popularly known includes a climbing wall for some interesting ways to try out you new clothing and gear. You can find higher priced items, but no better quality.
