Sony Ericsson W890i Preview - New Slimline Walkman
September 7, 2008
Sony Ericsson’s rapidly expanding range of Walkman phones are starting to garner a reputation as the best in the increasingly popular music-phone market and one of the most popular was the recent W880i. Now Sony Ericsson is gearing up to release the new-version of this hugely popular handset, the W890i.
Featuring very similar specs to its previous incarnation, the W890i may not be a major step up but it’s sure to strengthen Sony Ericsson’s position as the premier music phone manufacturer.
The dimensions of the W890i are almost identical to the W880i as it is still as thin as a CD case which Sony Ericsson were so fond of advertising last time, but a few more features have been put in to make sure this doesn’t look like a simple re-hash.
With 3G upgraded to HSDPA, a large 2” screen and an improved camera, which has leapt from 2MP to 3MP, the features seem to have been updated enough to tempt back consumers who already own the current version and may see this as a viable upgrade.
The integrated FM radio, Walkman player (as you would expect) and Track ID feature, which records a sample of the track playing on the radio and goes online to identify the artist and track, ensure that the W890i should be one of the leading music-phones on the market place.
By keeping the same looks as the W880i and upgrading the features enough to tempt previous owners into upgrading, it looks like Sony Ericsson are onto a winner here, but I’ll reserve judgement until an in-depth review is possible.
The W890i is, according to official news, going to be launched in Silver and Brown versions, however a recent Sony-Ericsson press release also revealed a Black version. We expect the initial release to be on Vodafone and O2. As yet there is no confirmation whether it will be released on Orange, Three,
T-mobile, or Virgin.
