Type 1 diabetes is also called insulin-dependent diabetes. It is a chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin, a hormone needed to convert sugar (glucose) into energy. Diabetes is a lifelong disease for which there is not yet a cure. There are several forms of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is caused by a lack of insulin output because of damage to the pancreas gland. The bodys defense system may attack insulin-making cells by mistake. Damage to the pancreas can occur for a many reasons, eg a viral infection. Insulin-producing cells in the pancreas of people with Type 1 diabetes are destroyed by cells that normally defend us from invading organisms.
