Casino Player Information: Where the Comps are in Tunica, Mississippi
September 6, 2008
I must admit. I love the word free when I’m in a casino. Tell me I’m comped and I’ll love you forever. Okay, that’s a bit extreme. Tell me I’m comped in the gift shop and I’ll love you forever. Throw in a steak house dinner every night we’re in town along with a couple of rounds of golf on Mississippi’s finest greens and friends, we’re packing! Yep, on the way out the door!
The truth is, we’ve been going to Mississippi for a number of years. The first time I went to Tunica was back in the early nineties. A lot has changed since then and yet, much has stayed the same. That good ole boys club is still around down there but better still, that good ole southern hospitality is ever present too.
There are nine casinos in Tunica and all of them have something different to offer players and as you might imagine, the gambling is pretty much the same regardless of where you decide to throw your money down. Still, there are two places that stand out as the best places in Tunica to grab a comp.
Hollywood Casino and Sam’s Town Tunica are my personal favorites. Why? Ahh…now, do I look like a woman that kisses and tells? Why sure, I admit it, I do. So let me seduce you with some gambler’s truths.
You can catch a buffet comp easily regardless of how or where you play but I have to tell you, I don’t give a flip about the buffet at any casino. I’m there for the better stuff. I want a free stay until I’m ready to go home and steakhouse dinners or room service if I’m working and I certainly don’t want to pay for my room or my food. If I play a lot and lose a lot, heaven forbid, then I also want a gift shop comp and should get one but won’t unless I’m at Hollywood or Sam’s Town.
I used to get everything I asked for at The Horseshoe. Those were the good ole days when a Binion-sighting wasn’t all that unusual and the comps were handed out like the early days of Benny Binion in a familiar desert town. Now, Harrah’s is there and comps are stiff but it’s still a great place for a steak dinner and a good gamble, but don’t expect a lot of freebies. It’s not happening at The Horseshoe.
Yes, I do realize that I sound like a greedy gambler and have a lot of wants and needs when I visit casino towns but the truth is ever present. I’m there to gamble and if the casinos keep me happy, I stay a lot longer than I should. Most players do and many of them feel exactly like I do. Hey now, the casinos want my money and I’ll let them have their shot at it but they have to play nice and encourage me to stay.
What I would spend on room, food, and entertainment, the casinos stand a shot at getting anyway. Every single time I step up to the tables. If they’re nice to me, I stay with them and I play with them and that’s when they stand a better chance at getting my whole bankroll for the trip. After all, every time I walk out of my room, the game’s on. Every single time I walk into the casino, the bosses upstairs have a shot at my wallet and my bank account if I get carried away. Yeah, they’re nice to me and at Sam’s Town and Hollywood, it’s the norm!
The good ole boys have taught them right. They wine and dine the right players and sometimes, when they win, it was worth their trouble to comp those players. When I win? Well, let’s just say, when I win, I don’t do enough damage for them to miss that one room they comped for several nights.
Just like Vegas, Tunica wasn’t built on winners but when I stay with Hollywood Casino or Sam’s Town, I feel like one every time. I’m spoiled, pampered and made to feel like a treasured player before they send me back home to reality and that my friends, is worth its weight gold—win or lose.
